Solutions for All Cases
Lingual Frenectomy
Tongue tie occurs when the frenulum, the tissue that connects the tongue to the base of the mouth, is too restricting. This can lead to mouth breathing and an arched or high palate that can result in a narrow or small airway more likely to be obstructed during sleep. A lingual frenectomy alleviates the tongue’s restriction and allow for proper movement.
Genial Tubercle Advancement
Surgery for sleep apnea may be necessary when more conservative treatment has failed to improve symptoms. These surgeries can include genial tubercle advancement, or tongue repositioning. Moving the bone and tongue forward can create a wider airway to help improve breathing during sleep.
Maxillomandibular Advancement
Severe sleep apnea cases may need more advanced surgical treatment such as orthognathic surgery to bring the lower jaw forward. Known as maxillomandibular advancement surgery, this procedure moves the foundation of the face forward to enlarge the upper airway. This helps the airway be more resistant to pressure from soft tissue collapse to reduce obstruction during sleep.
